Can Oracle Cards Help You Trust Your Intuition?
Share
In my last article, I was exploring a very common question about how we learn to trust our intuition. Fascinatingly, I have been on quite a journey to connect with my intuition and to learn how to trust it more. And I thought I would share a few things I picked up on a portion of that journey…the thread of oracle cards that has woven through for me as I explored.
My first connection with oracle cards was a little tentative. People had told me many things about them that actually led me to question whether they could ever be helpful. Some people seemed to think they were connecting me to some kind of spiritual higher power. Others thought they might be dark magic.
And none of this resonated with me. I happen to feel this view of oracle cards could be seen as rooted in an older paradigm of magic and superstition. And if we become caught up in that we may end up giving our power away and actually missing a fun way of connecting with more layers of our inner world.
Do oracle cards have to be magic or superstition?
Now, to those of you who do feel that oracle cards are a vehicle for connecting with something spiritual, I am not trying to make you wrong. As I see it, humans are built for connection and however we find that connection is beautiful. I would simply like to suggest another angle of exploration which you might find helpful if you are someone who feels curious about oracle cards, but uncertain about your feelings around spirituality or magic.
And that idea: What if the cards were actually just a fun way of engaging with our existing intuition or inner knowing. Perhaps we might call it our Higher Self, and perhaps that still seems to convey something outside of our physical body. But it isn’t something that is truly external to us. Even if we do believe the cards are connecting us to Source – the creator being – I happen to subscribe to the belief that each of us carries a spark of Source within us. So, we’re still just accessing a facet of ourselves.
Could this facet be dangerous or lead us down unhelpful paths? Of course it could: Our shadows, things like envy, greed, fear, even doubt or shame, can all create a lens through which we view the world. So, whether you’re picking an oracle card or trying to intellectually “reason” your way through a problem, you still have the potential to come up against these shadow elements. And if you do, it’s not (I believe) because you’re being punished or targeted in some way (as the idea of black magic implies) – it’s simply to show you these shadows exist within you so you can choose how to handle them.

How can oracle cards help?
So, the further I embodied this reasoning, the more curious I became about oracle cards. I began to choose decks that simply appealed to me. And the more decks I acquire, the more I notice how they all contain similar themes: They may be expressed differently, depending on whether you’re working with dragons or fairies or animals or starseeds, etc. But in essence, they are still inviting you to look in similar areas – self-care and rest, letting things go, stepping into your power, discovering your calling, learning self-trust, serving others, holding healthy boundaries.
And if, on any given day, it serves me to have a reminder to check my boundaries or contemplate how I wish to show up and serve, or to take a rest, then why not receive that message through the medium of a card? It may still be a connection with a part of my subconscious.
It may also be true that I pick a card and feel that the meaning bears no relevance to me whatsoever. I have the freedom to ignore it. Or the freedom to contemplate and see if it might be trying to show me something I’ve actually been missing. Either way, treating this as a fun adventure is serving me well right now.
How this fed into creating the Kolorlan Card Deck
It never even occurred to me that I would be creating a card deck of my own. Yet, that is exactly what I ended up doing when I created the Kolorlan System. In my case, the cards are colours, but as those of you who have the cards, or have taken the Kolorlan Journeys, will know, each colour carries messages just as fairies or dragons might.
And the message is never black and white: That isn’t how I believe oracle cards can be most helpful. We’re not supposed to be handing our power to an external source to tell us what to do – at least I don’t think we are. I believe we are each here to become curious about who we really are, what powers we actually possess, and how we can use those to shape our reality, or understand our experience.
So, with that understanding, I see oracle cards in whatever form as invitations to contemplate and explore. Of the many layers or messages that each one shares, which are you drawn to in this moment? That offers a clue to where you might wish to place some focus, or perhaps let something go. And that form of guidance feels to me like a beautiful partnership between my conscious and subconscious – if I choose to see it as my spiritual guidance and my physical body or mind, that is also possible.
So, how do you feel about this? Are you someone who already uses oracle cards? Have you tried out the Kolorlan card deck yet? Or, would you still see this as pointless nonsense?
